Consumer recoveries hit all-time high in state Attorney General Mark Barnett has announced that the Division of Consumer Protection recovered over $1.5 million for South Dakota consumers during fiscal year 1999. The mark sets an all-time high for consumer recoveries.
"My investigators had a very successful year in resolving consumer complaints," Barnett said. "Their work is paying huge dividends for South Dakota consumers."
The Division of Consumer Protection handled 2,163 complaints from July 1, 1998 to June 30, 1999. The Division was able to obtain recoveries in 75 percent of all cases, resulting in total recoveries of $1,536,683.
Barnett also issued his annual top ten list of consumer complaints. Credit card complaints topped the list for the third straight year, followed by complaints on computers, billings and automobiles.
"Use caution in all business deals, but especially those over the phone. Shop with established, local businesses. And look after elderly relatives, who often become the targets of con artist," Barnett said. "We can often resolve complaints, but prevention is the best solution."
