Tanager girls soccer team opens with two wins The 1999 Tanagers are off to a fast start again this year after posting victories in their first two matches. In Sioux Falls last Saturday, the Tanagers defeated Pierre by a score of 5-0 and handed Aberdeen Central a 6-2 defeat.
Coming off a third place finish in the 1998 High School Tournament, the Tanagers return 13 letterwinners including three first-team All State players. Returning letterwinners include seniors Hilary Pederson, Kim Hoffman and Courtney Nelson. Thirty-two players began twice-daily practices on Aug. 9 in preparation for the 1999 season. The varsity team will play a 15-match schedule, culminating with the South Dakota State High School Soccer Tournament in Pierre Oct. 8 and 9.
In the opening match with Pierre, the Tanagers achieved the 5-0 shutout by outshooting the Lady Governors 20-3. Cold shooting by the Tanagers, combined with several outstanding saves by the Pierre goalkeeper, kept the score from being more lopsided. Michelle Rasmussen and Kelly Peterson each had two goals for the Tanagers, while Kayla Larson added one. Carly Bernard and Michelle Rasmussen each recorded an assist. Goalkeeper Natasha Peton recorded the shutout with a relatively routine three saves.
Against Aberdeen Central, the Tanagers again completely dominated the attack with a shooting edge of 30-5. The shooting touch again alluded the Tanagers and two defensive errors resulted in Aberdeen goals. The Tanagers prevailed on the strength of three goals by Kelly Peterson, two by Rasmussen and one by Courtney Nelson. Katy Carlson and Michelle Rasmussen each assisted on one goal. Goalkeeper Peton again enjoyed a quiet time in goal with two saves.
This Saturday the Tanagers travel to Watertown for matches with Watertown and Huron. The Tanagers' first home match is scheduled for Aug. 31 against Sioux Falls Washington at 6 p.m. at Cotton Park. The Tanagers invite all local soccer enthusiasts to come to the games.
