Clubs Vermillion Lions Club The Vermillion Lions Club held its first meeting of the 1999-2000 year on Thursday, Sept. 2, in the VFW clubroom.

Lion Julie Potter, newly installed president, presided. The list of committees and committee chairs was distributed to those in attendance. During dinner, Tail Twister Mick Breske collected $6 in "fines" from members whom he was able to stump or who were in "violation" of rules and regulations.

Lion Bill Radigan introduced his guest, his son Bill Radigan Jr., who graduated from Vermillion High School in 1963. A two member pin was presented to Jim Prosser who brought two new members into the club.

The Vermillion Lions Club will host the Lions Mobile Screening Unit during the April Pancake Days. The unit will be parked outside the Armory from 4 to 8 p.m. and will offer screening of hearing, vision, blood pressure and blood sugar to the public. Lion Jackie Dunn will chair the mobile unit committee.

The club will also have a float in the Dakota Days Parade on Saturday, Oct. 9. Randy Sullivan will chair the float committee.

The Board of Directors will meet Thursday morning Sept. 9, at 7 a.m. at Janie's Sweet Temptations.

Following the business meeting, John Waltner, president of First National Bank in Freeman, spoke about "Reaching for the Stars." Using the constellation Orion and the concept that earth and its inhabitants are a spaceship hurtling through space carrying its own air supply, water supply and food supply, he posed the questions "Are we taking care of our environment?" "Are we taking care of ourselves?" and "Are we taking care of our fellow astronauts?"

The next meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 16. The speaker for that evening will be Barb Ballensky from the Southeast Transportation System. There will be a zone meeting following the regular dinner meeting. Regional Chair Chuck Wray of Elk Point will be in attendance.
