Daschle accepting academy applications Senator Tom Daschle said that South Dakota young people interested in being nominated to one of the four U.S. Service Academies should apply to his office by Oct. 31.
South Dakota residents between the ages of 17 and 23 can apply to any of the four service academies if they meet eligibility requirements in leadership, physical aptitude, scholarship and character. The four service academies are the Military Academy at West Point, N Y; the Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD; the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO; and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY.
"Each year many talented South Dakota young people apply for the limited appointment spaces at our nation's service academies, and deciding whom to recommend is never an easy process," Daschle said. "I put the October 31 deadline in place to ensure that my academy advisory committee and I will have enough time to review all of applications and make the most informed recommendations possible."
Daschle and his Academy Advisory Committee, which is made up of South Dakotans with various military backgrounds, will make final recommendations to the academies on the most qualified candidates by Jan. 31. The academies will make offers of appointment next spring.
