Freshman Lady Tanagers win tough Canton contest by Jim Prosser In a back-and-forth contest, the Vermillion freshman Lady Tanagers battled to a tough up-and-down win over the Canton C-Hawks 31-24 in girls basketball Sept. 14. at Vermillion.
VHS had trailed by one after the third quarter.
The Tanager offense was led by Jenna Gilkyson and Brooke Nelson.
�I thought Jenna Gilkyson and Brooke Nelson had excellent games for us at the offensive end,� said VHS Coach Marilyn Martyn.
The Lady Tanagers jumped in front 8-6 at the end of the first period, the game was knotted 13-13 after the second period, and the Lady Tanagers trailed 20-19 after the third period.
�We, again, continue to play well at the defensive end,� said Coach Martyn. �We just need to have more consistency at the offensive end.�
VHS improved its record to 2-2, while CHS freshmen dropped to 1-3.
VHS hit 9 of 13 free throw attempts while the C-Hawks made 2 of 5 free throw attempts.
Several individual efforts helped in the win.
�Jenna Gilkyson had 12 points and 8 rebounds,� Coach Martyn said. �Brooke Nelson had 9 points and 3 rebounds. Allison Stewart had 4 points and 4 rebounds. Morgan Hollingsworth had 2 points and 6 rebounds.�
The Lady Tanagers will play Sioux Falls Washington Saturday, Sept. 25 at home. The 9B game begins at 1 p.m., and the 9A game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
