JV football defeats Yankton By Jim Prosser The Tanager JV football team gave up a couple �questionable freebies� in a 30-20 win over the Yankton Bucks JV on Monday, Sept. 13.

Quarterback Brandon Benzel went four of six for 64 yards in passing and scored the Tanager final touchdown. Dan Tolsma opened the scoring in the second quarter with a two yard run (Adam Brooks EP kick) while Dave Hanson scored twice on three yard and six yard runs in the third quarter.(EP kicks-Brooks).

Hanson had 100 yards on 14 carries,and Tolsma went 82 yards on 11 rushes. Adam Brooks (18 yards � 2 carries) contributed to the 223 yard team rushing total.

The VHS JV had 16 first downs and held YHS JV to seven, surrendering 96 yards rushing and 66 yards passing. Yankton scored twice in the second quarter on a pass interception (67 yards) and a �halftime� pass play (33 yards � the clock showed 0:00)

A stiff defense protected the lead with some great efforts by a team tackle total of 40, with eight defenders making three or four each and Oliver Hope having two pass breakups and Brett Jepsen scoring two �sacks.� VHS also scored a safety.

With the win, the JV upped their record to 3-0 and will next be in action at SF Roosevelt on Monday, Sept. 20 for a 4:15 p.m. kickoff.

Coaches comments: Jim McGuire � �It�s always nice to get a win at Yankton. We didn�t play very enthused or smart football in the first half but came out and did a much better in the second half.�

Roger Heirigs � �Our offensive line was able to establish the line of scrimmage in the second half and were able to get the running game going. The backs ran much harder in the second half and, as Coach McGuire stated, it�s always nice to get a win at Yankton.�
