JV Lady Tanagers overpower Canton by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV Lady Tanagers overpowered the Canton C-Hawks 49-29 in girls basketball Sept. 14 at Vermillion in a win carried by a strong first quarter.
Carey Engstrom scored 10 points and had four steals in two quarters.
�Casey came out and played two fantastic quarters of basketball, both offensively and defensively,� said VHS Coach Troy Terronez.
The Lady Tanagers took the lead 17-5 after the first quarter, and margins of 10-5 and 9-4 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 36-14 going into the final period.
�We had a balanced offensive game, which made us hard to guard,� said Coach Terronez. �The girls have been complementing each other and developing as a team. That makes them a fine group to watch and coach.�
VHS improved its season mark to 5-1, while the CHS junior varsity fell to 2-4.
VHS made 12 of 15 from the line while the C-Hawks made 9 of 14 free throw attempts.
Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.
�Abby Moore pulled in 5 rebounds, had 2 steals, 3 assists and scored 4 points,� Coach Terronez said.
