JV Tanagers beat S.F. Patriots 51-47 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV Lady Tanagers downed the Sioux Falls Lincoln Patriots 51-47 in girls basketball Sept.11 at Sioux Falls in a matchup that was close throughout.
Ashley Bjorkman scored 11 points, pulled in 6 rebounds, had 1 block and 1 steal. Nikki Mollet had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Carrie Engstrom had 5 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists.
�This was a real team effort,� said VHS Coach Troy Terronez.
The Lady Tanagers jumped in front 11-9 after the opening period, led 25-21 at halftime, and then held a lead of 33-32 going into the fourth quarter.
Both sides were plagued by turnovers, with the Lady Tanagers turning it over 24 times, and the Patriots committing 27 turnovers.
�The girls responded to the pressure in a positive manner,� said Coach Terronez. �We found a way to win, playing a solid opponent right down to the wire.�
VHS improved its record to 4-1, while Lincoln JV dropped to 3-2.
VHS made 22 of 36 from the line while the Patriots sank 16 of 28 free throw tries.
The winners needed good efforts from several performers.
�Tessa Tuetken went 12 for 14 at the free throw line, with 10 in the fourth quarter,� Coach Terronez said.
