Lady Tanagers edged by S.F. Lincoln Patriots By by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanager varsity girls basketball team was edged by the Sioux Falls Lincoln Patriots 55-52 in basketball Sept. 11 at Sioux Falls in a matchup that was close throughout.
The loss dropped the Lady Tanagers season record to 2-3 while Lincoln moved to 5-0.
Sioux Falls Lincoln is ranked fifth among South Dakota's AA teams.
Jaclyn Powell had a solid game with 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 13 points. Sarah Mollet played well, too with six points in the second half. Alison Obr started strong with 13 points in the first quarter but was shut out the rest of the night.
The Tanagers jumped ahead 17-13 at the end of the first period, the score was 25-25 at halftime, and Vermillion trailed 40-38 going into the final period.
The Tanagers tried to stay in the game from three-point range, hitting 5 of 8 from long distance, but it wasn�t enough.
�I was very proud of our effort against Sioux Falls Lincoln, which is the number five ranked AA team,� said Coach Lance Luitjens. �Once again, we put ourselves in a position to win the game and just came up a little short.�
In the first half, Lincoln went into a box-in-one to shut down Obr from outside.
�I thought we adjusted well to their defense in the second half,� Coach Luitjens said.
Vermillion made 9 of 15 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 19 of 40 field goals, while Lincoln was 21 of 38 from the field. The Patriots made 11 of 18 from the line.
Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.
�Tessa Tuetken was 3 for 3 in field goals, had 3 assists and 0 turnovers,� Coach Luitjens said.
The Lady Tanagers will play Montrose on Saturday, Sept. 18.

The VHS freshmen/sophomore combined team lost to Sioux Falls Lincoln 45-25. Morgan Hollingsworth scored 8 points and had 5 rebounds. Scoring 4 points each were Kaylee Heesch, Brooke Nelson and Abbey Moore.
