Lady Tanagers top Canton by Jim Prosser The Vermillion High varsity Lady Tanagers topped the Canton C-Hawks 68-53 in girls basketball Sept. 14 at Vermillion as the winners led after each quarter.
Alison Obr scored 17 points with an 84 percent shot average and Sarah Mollet shot 70 percent in scoring 10 points (8 in the fourth quarter).
The Lady Tanagers jumped in front 14-11 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 28-20 at halftime, and then led 46-35 going into the final period.
�This was a nice win for us against a traditional rival,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens. �It was great to see an enthusiastic home crowd cheering us on. I felt all of our girls really played hard the entire game, especially at the defensive end.�
In the opening period, Alison Obr went 4 for 4 (including two 3-pointers) to set up the tempo of the game.
In the second quarter, Nikki Mollet scored all of her 8 points to help maintain the established lead.
VHS improved its record to 3-3, while the CHS varsity dropped to 3-3.
VHS made 4 of 14 three-point tries and hit 18 of 29 free throw attempts. The Lady Tanagers sank 23 of 34 field goal attempts, while the CHS varsity was 20 of 38 from the field. CHS varsity made 1 of 1 three-pointers and hit 10 of 24 from the line.
The Lady Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.
�Tessa Tuetken sank 7 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter,� Coach Luitjens said.
