Montrose Lady Irish fall to VHS by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV Lady Tanagers hammered the Montrose Lady Irish 46-5 in girls basketball Sept. 18 at Vermillion in a win ignited by a first-quarter blitz.
Ashley Thompson scored 10 points and pulled in 5 rebounds. Carrie Engstrom scored 8 points and had 8 rebounds.
The Lady Tanagers took the lead 17-2 after the first quarter, and margins of 8-1 and 10-0 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 35-3 going into the final period.
The Lady Tanagers forced 20 MHS junior varsity turnovers to help the victory.
�The girls really did a nice job with the defensive pressure and controlling the boards, which led to several lay-up opportunities,� said VHS Coach Troy Terronez.
VHS improved its season mark to 6-1, while the MHS junior varsity fell to 1-6.
VHS hit 2 of 5 free throw tries. The Lady Tanagers hit 22 of 34 from the field. The Lady Irish connected on 1 of 4 free throw attempts.
VHS held a 36-18 edge on the boards.
The Lady Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.
�Brooke Nelson also contributed with 7 assists,� Coach Terronez said. �As a freshman, she is really doing a nice job finding the open person.�
The Lady Tanagers will play Sioux Falls Washington Saturday, Sept. 25 in Vermillion. This will be a 5 � game festival. The frosh B team plays at 1 p.m., the frosh A team plays at 2:30 p.m., the JV plays at 4 p.m., the sophomores play at 5:45 p.m. and the varsity plays at 7:30 p.m.
