It's been 195 years since Lewis and Clark and their Corps of Discovery journeyed through the Clay County area, visiting Spirit Mound during their northwest travels on the Missouri River. The spirit of the two explorers was brought to life Aug. 25, the 195th anniversary of their visit to Spirit Mound, at the first annual Spirit of Lewis and Clark Festival, held at the W.H. Over Museum in Vermillion. After being served a meal of buffalo burgers, chips and beverages by Hy-Vee, area residents were treated to a program in the museum lasting well into the evening. Ole Olson, a historian from Elk Point, re-enacted the role of one of the members of the Corps of Discovery.
