Tanager JV football team smothers South Sioux City, NE Cardinals 31-0 By Jim Prosser Led by a smothering defense and zero turnovers, the Vermillion Tanager JV football team swamped the SSC Cardinals 31-0 on Sept. 7 to up their record to 2-0.
Quarterback Brandon Benzel completed three of five passes for 67 yards with no interceptions. Clint Christensen went 17 yards on a pass from Benzel for the opening TD. Adam Brooks kicked the extra point.
Dan Tolsma (87 yards/seven carries), Eric Rickord (62 yards/six carries) and Dustin Larson (35 yards/seven carries) contributed to the 198 yard total in rushes with both Rickord and Tolsma scoring twice. A stiff defense was again led by Dave Hanson (eight tackles), Dustin Larson (six tackles) and Thad Roche (six tackles) with Oliver Hope and Ryan Pickett adding five tackles each as SSC was held to 118 yards rushing and 7 yards passing.
Jeff Gilbertson intercepted a pass on the 41 yard line and returned it 37 yards to the four yard line, setting up the last TD.
Coaches Jim McGuire and Roger Heirigs had this to say about the game: McGuire � �It was nice to record the shutout by our defense and the offensive line improved tremendously from our first game.� Heirigs � �Our offense had some big plays and capitalized on good field position. It was nice to be able to play everyone in a game like this.�
