Tanagers lose tough battle to Elk Point-Jefferson 55-54 Elk Point-Jefferson�s Emily Kyte�s basket off an inbound pass with only one second left in the game sealed a victory for the Huskies as the Vermillion Lady Tanagers fell short in a fourth-quarter comeback and lost a tough one to EP-J 55-54 in basketball Aug. 31 at Vermillion.
Vermillion had trailed by 7 after three periods.
�It was a devastating finish to a hard fought game,� said Coach Lance Luitjens of the clinching moment. �I�ve never seen a game as crazy as this one.�
The loss gave Vermillion a record of 1-2 while EP-J moved to 1-0.
The Tanagers� Alison Obr scored 21 points, pulled in six rebounds and had one steal. EP-J�s Steph Limoges had four 3-point baskets.
Vermillion jumped ahead 16-9 after the first quarter, but was outscored 19-16 in the second period and 15-4 in the third to trail 43-36 going into the final period.
Vermillion lost the game from the free throw line, making one of seven charity tosses compared with 13 of 25 for EP-J.
�Aside from the last two minutes, we played a great first half,� said Coach Luitjens. �Turnovers and mental breakdowns hurt us in the end. We did give a valiant effort coming from 9 points down.�
In the third quarter, the Huskies� Sarah Patnaude scored 7-points and Limoges scored 4 points to give the Huskies a 15-4 advantage and a 7 point lead.
In the fourth period, Vermillion�s Alison Obr forged a 14 point output, including four 3-point baskets, to aid in taking a 54-53 lead.
