Tanagers overcome fumbles to win Vermillion Tanager Jason Madsen (25) finds plenty of running room in this play against the Madison Bulldogs thanks, in part, to effect blocking by Thad Roche (18). Vermillion defeated Madison 41-0 in football action Sept. 17 in the DakotaDome. There were six fumbles in the Big Eight Conference football game between the Bulldogs from Madison and the Vermillion Tanagers in the Dakota Dome last Friday.

Unfortunately, Vermillion commited five of them which slowed down the express to the

lop-sided 41-0 Tanager victory.

In a remarkable offensive show, a total of 409 yards by the Tanagers out-distanced the 154 total for the Bulldogs.

Scoring summary:

VHS: Tim Russell � seven-yard pass from Cullen Iverson; Thad Roche � 18-yard run; Iverson � one-yard run; Jared Thedorff � one-yard run and 19-yard pass from Iverson; Adam Koller � 22-yard pass from Iverson; Adam Brooks kicked three of four extra points and Roche ran for a two- point extra point.

Individual stats for Vermillion: Roche 74 yards/13 carries; Thedorff 69 yards/12 carries; Jason Madsen 74 yards/four carries; Iverson 69 yards/nine carries, also 5-6 passing for 71 yards and three TDs.

Defense stats: Tackles � a cooperative team effort led by Wes Christensen and Iverson (three each), five members had two each and 16 shared 16 among them. Jason Madson, had five pass break-ups and Travis Vacek two, and Dave Hanson recovered a fumble.

"We couldn't have scripted a better half of football than we had against Madison in the first two quarters," said Coach Gary Culver. "Our kids really stepped it up on both sides of the football. Our offensive line just dominated the game and defensively, I thought we were just outstanding against one of the better passing QBs that I have seen at the high school level."

With the win, the varsity upped their record to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The Tanagers will next be in action as they travel to Lennox to battle the Orioles Friday, Sept. 24 with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
