Austin Elementary School held its first fire drill of the school year last Wednesday to teach children the proper way to exit the school in case of a fire alarm. The timing of the drill turned out to be nearly perfect. The Vermillion Fire Department was called at 1:49 p.m. Friday and the school was evacuated after school personnel suspected that there was a fire somewhere in the structure. Firemen discovered an electrical fire in a utility closet. Teachers escorted students to the nearby county 4-H center and they were dismissed from there. Traffic control was provided by the Vermillion Police Department, the Clay County Sheriff's Department and The University of South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
