YBA completes 20th anniversary Youth Business Adventure recently completed its 20th year of hosting high school seniors, teachers and counselors from across the state during a week-long session in Pierre. Mary Basom of Vermillion High School attended from the local area. Participants spent the week gaining vital information about the business world from those who work and live in that world, the "loaned executives" or company advisors including David Gross of CorTrust Bank in Vermillion and YBA Board Chair Pat Wingen of AaLadin Industries in Elk Point.
Since its inception in 1980, YBA has been sponsored by the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry, a statewide business organization located in Pierre. The program is funded by contributions from generous sponsors throughout the state. The Vermillion Area Chamber of Commerce is a local sponsor of the program.
In addition to the management simulation, the week included competition in a Quiz Bowl using business terms, production of one minute commercials, participation in a problem solving activity, and presentations made by the individual companies before a panel of judges. Students also were entertained with evening activities of bowling, swimming, a dance, and attendance at the final performance of the Prairie Repertory's summer theater production.
Preparations are currently underway for the 21st annual sessions of the Youth Business Adventure program. For further information about YBA, contact the local participants or call 1-800-742-8112
