Blessid Union of Souls to perform The rock 'n' roll band Blessid Union of Souls of Cincinnati, OH, will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28 in Slagle Hall Auditorium at The University of South Dakota. The group will be backed up by Kory and the Fireflies. The performance is sponsored by the USD Program Council Entertainment Committee.
Blessid Union, a rootsy, Midwestern five-member band, is gearing up for their newly released album Walking Off the Buzz on Push/V2 Records. The title track, Walking Off the Buzz, deals with the sting of a broken relationship and was a cathartic experience for some of the band members who recently suffered major breakups of their own. Another of the album's standout songs is Standing at the Edge of the Earth.
The album Hey Leonardo was released in early March of this year. Interestingly that album had its beginnings when band member Eliot Sloan traveled to South Dakota to visit a friend. "It occurred to me," said Sloan, "that this girl just liked me for me and that I didn't have to know or be a big star to win her affections. And then Leonardo DiCaprio's name plugged in because whenever I'd go on tour, the young girls down the street would ask me to say 'hi,' to Leonardo or Hanson because they just figured I knew them," said Sloan.
In 1995, the group's debut single, I Believe, an anthem-like ballad about racial equality, went to number one and was the fourth most played song of the 1995. The band appeared on national TV on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. The song Let Me Be the One, followed, pushing the band's debut album, Home, to platinum status.
The band includes Sloan (lead vocals and piano), Jeff Pence (guitar), C.P. Roth (keyboard, bass and harmonica), Eddie Hedges (drums and percussion) and Tony Clark (bass and guitars).
Tickets went on sale Oct. 18 for the general public at a cost of $15. USD student tickets went on sale Oct. 12 for $10. On the day of the concert, all tickets will be $15.
