Eighth-grade girls defeat S.F. Washington The eighth-grade girls basketball team improved their record to 3-1 defeating the Sioux Falls Washington freshman B team. This game kicked off the basketball extravaganza held at Vermillion High School on Sept. 25.
"The girls were a little nervous heading into the game because the opponents were a year older than themselves, but the girls handled themselves very well and should be extremely proud of the way they played together," said Coach Iverson.
Kayla Mollet took control in the middle of the lane scoring 10 points. She was followed in scoring by Brittney Gilkyson with six. Kristen Kitto showed her quickness by driving into the lane and scoring four points, while Kathleen Redlin, Delayna Gale and Tera Dehner rounded out the scoring column, each chipping in a bucket for two points.
The Redbirds controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Warriors 32-24. This was an area that the team had struggled in previous games, but showed tremendous improvement against the Warriors. Mollet led the team with seven rebounds, followed closely by Redlin with six. Gale added five and Colette Joy snagged four.
With four steals each, Kitto and Mollet proved to be defensive threats as well as offensive threats.
Sarah Merrigan, Nicki Nelson, Winonah Wilch, Whitney Lawrence, Sarah Gregg, Michelle Buckanaga and Christine Berry all played hard and gave the team some quality minutes while they were in the game.
The Redbirds' next game will be on Oct. 4 when they take on Brandon Valley in Brandon.
