Eighth-graders crunch O’Gorman

Eighth-graders crunch O'Gorman The eighth-grade Redbird football team dominated both the offense and defense against Sioux Falls O'Gorman at the Vermillion High School field Saturday, Sept. 25 as they swamped the Knights 30-6.

Jared Burcham rushed 12 times for 106 yards (one TD – one-yard run, two-point EP). B.J. Campbell went 91 yards on 11 carries (three TDs, two two-point EPs). His touchdowns were scored on 11, 23 and eight yards.

Max Meyer rushed five times for 47 yards. Adam Brunick completed three passes for 16 yards to aid in giving a 246-yard total offense, while O'Gorman was held to 61 yards total.

The defense was credited with 43 tackles, led by Kellen Cusijk with six, followed by Max Mayer and Campbell (five each), Paul Abourezk and Jared Burcham (four each) and Trevor Garrett and Brunick (three each).

Sacks were made by Burcham, Garrett, Nathan Scheidel and Paul Hugo (who also had a fumble recovery).

Other recoveries were registered by Collin Prosser (two), who also caused a fumble and broke up a pass to go with three tackles.

With the win over O'Gorman, the eighth-grade Redbirds upped their record to 2-0 and were scheduled to play at Brandon Valley on Sept. 28.

"It was a great win for our team," said Coach Lauren Tolsma. "Anytime you can beat Sioux Falls O'Gorman like we did, you have to be pleased. Our offense controlled the ball the entire game and our defense was just outstanding."

"I was elated with the play of our offensive line," added Casey O'Connor. "Anytime you move the football on the ground like we did, somebody is doing the job up front."

Our defensive front line put pressure on their quarterback all day and we really took away their rushing attack in the second half."
