Eighth-graders place third at tournament The Vermillion eighth-grade girls basketball team came in third place at the Beresford Tournament Sept. 18. In first round action, Vermillion was matched up with a good Beresford team. It was close throughout the entire game, but when the buzzer sounded Beresford was victorious with a score of 17-20. Kayla Mollett led the attack for the Redbirds grabbing 10 rebounds and netting six points.
Colette Joy came off the bench to score four points and spark the team with her tremendous defense and hustle. Kristen Kitto knocked down three points and had three steals, while Brittany Gilkyson had two points, two steals and two assists.
Tera Dehner hit a free throw for one, rounding out the scoring column. Rebounding hurt the Redbirds in this game with Beresford out-rebounding them by 10.
The Redbirds bounced back in their second game, claiming a convincing 35-14 victory over Alcester -Hudson. This game was truly a team effort with all 20 girls playing and 11 of them scoring. Kitto led all scorers with eight points. She also had two steals and three assists.
Mollett added five points, while Winonah Wilch and Delayna Gale each had four. Gilkyson, Dehner, Kathleen Redlin, Nicki Nelson, Ashley Hofer, Brittany Orr and Sonja Merrigan each chipped in a bucket. Mollet led the team in rebounding grabbing six boards, while Joy was close behind with four.
The Redbirds are now 2-1 on the season.
