Freshman Lady Tanagers defeated by Yankton 31-23 The Vermillion freshman Lady Tanagers were downed by the Yankton Gazelles 31-23 in girls basketball Oct. 5 at Vermillion.
�Whitney Tolsma and Jenna Gilkyson carried the offense in the second quarter and Allison Stewart hustled and was aggressive on defense (in spite of colds and the flu),� said VHS Coach Marilyn Martyn.
The contest was well-played, with each team committing only 5 turnovers.
The Lady Tanagers fell behind 9-5 at the end of the first period, trailed 19-15 at halftime, and then trailed 25-17 going into the final period.
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 3-5, while Yankton freshmen improved to 6-2.
VHS sank 1 of 6 free throw attempts while the Gazelles sank 1 of 2 free throw tries.
The Lady Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
�The team gave a real good effort and look forward to the rematch later this month,� Coach Martyn said.
