Freshmen lose high-scoring contest against Brookings The VHS freshman football team lost another high-scoring affair (38-22) to the Brookings Bobcats at the Vermillion High School field on Tuesday, Oct. 5.
The young Tanagers came back from a 32-point deficit in the third quarter to score three unanswered touchdowns. The Bobcat frosh tacked on a final score in the last minute of the game.
The Vermillion defense was the victim of a couple big plays but grudgingly gave up yardage to a larger and faster team. Leading defenseman was Jeff Brevik with six tackles and Brian Thomas and Rob Foster had five tackles each. Derek Thomas had four and Dan Holoch, Matt Varns and Bart Miller were credited with three each. Miller also intercepted a pass.
The offense was led by Jon Brooks with a six of 11 passes for 61 yards and Michael Buckanaga who had eight rushes for 59 yards including a 25-yard TD, along with Jeff Brevik who carried 14 times for 90 yards and Adam Hasse with a two-yard TD run included in his 21 yards rushing on five carries. Bart Miller scored on a seven-yard run and also ran for a two-point conversion. Nick Olson scored a two-point EP on a pass from Brooks.
"Defensively , we just gave up too many big plays in the first half and from then on we were climbing a huge mountain all day long," said Coach Devin Schwiesow. "The opening kickoff return for a TD took the wind out of our sails and we didn't recover until it was too late."
"Offensively, we got on track in the second half, but 32 points is a huge lead to overcome at the freshman level," Jason Huska added. "Our guys never gave up though, and had we recovered a couple of onside kicks, anything might have happened in the last quarter."
With the loss, the freshman record dipped to 0-7 and they close out their season next week as they host the Sioux Falls Washington Warriors Oct. 12 at 4:15 p.m. at the high school field.
