Frosh team seems ‘accident prone’

Frosh team seems 'accident prone' The Vermillion freshman football team must be "snake-bit" as they fell Sept. 23 to a fired-up Lennox Oriole ninth- grade team 22-6.

The offensive line appeared to spring a leak, occasionally, and a tidal wave of nose guards and linebackers rushed through the breach to sack a defenseless Tanager quaterback.

Fumbles and intercepted passes contributed to Lennox's first two scores as the Vermillion defense spent an awful lot of time "on the field" and grudgingly gave up yardage to a larger and faster team.

Leading defenseman was Brian Thomas with 12 tackles, one sack and a pass break-up. He was ably assisted by Rob Foster (seven stops and one fumble recovery), Derek Thomas (six tackles), and Bart Miller and Jeff Brevik (five tackles each).

The offense was held to only 29 plays by a fierce Oriole swarming defense. Michael Buckanaga had 11 rushes for 62 yards including a 45-yard TD, and Brevik carried eight times for 23 yards. Jon Brooks was 1-3-1 in passing, completing a 23-yarder to Buckanaga.

"That freshman team from Lennox just over-powered our line and we couldn't establish our running game or develop our game plan," said Coach Devin Schwiesow.

The season record dips to 0-5. The team played at Yankton on Sept. 30.
