Girls tennis team places 10th in state tournament The Vermillion High School girls tennis team placed 10th at the state tournament in Sioux Falls last weekend.
"Our goal at the beginning of the season was to place in the top ten and we are excited to have accomplished this, as we compete against all the AA as well as A schools," said Coach Barb Rickard.
Anna Ristic placed third in Flight 1 singles. Her season record was 16-2 with her only losses being to Liz Donohue, Sioux Falls O'Gorman, and Tara Houlihan, Sioux Falls Lincoln, the state #1 and #2 players.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Anna," Rickard said. "She works very hard year round and it has paid off for her. She is an excellent competitor, hard worker and a very focused player. In recognition of her level of play at the state tournament, she was honored by being selected to the All-Tournament Team. This is a prestigious award and she is very deserving of it. I am very happy for her."
All of the girls played well in the tournament, according to Rickard. Laura Doohen and Maya Ristic had excellent first-round wins. Other first-round winners included Ristic/Ristic in Flight 1 doubles and Tracey Walworth/Lindsay Iverson in Flight 3 doubles. Winning consolation matches were Iverson in Flight 3 singles, Vanessa Noonan in Flight 6 singles, Doohen/Noonan in Flight 2 doubles.
Several other matches throughout the tournament could have gone either way. In Flight 3 doubles Walworth/Iverson lost a tight match (6-7, 6-7) in the second round to the eventual finalists from Rapid City Stevens. Brenda Banks lost (5-7, 5-7) to the eventual semi-finalist in Flight 5. Noonan lost to O'Gorman (8-10) in Flight 6 consolation semi-finals. Iverson lost (8-10) in the consolation finals of Flight 3 singles.
"Each girl put forth her best effort and I was very proud of how everyone played," Rickard said. "It was a good tournament for us; our records are the best in over five years."
The team finished the season with a record of 7-7.
