JV Tanagers finish undefeated The Vermillion High School junior varsity football team completed an undefeated season as they beat the Yankton Bucks by 20-14 at the Vermillion High School football field on Oct. 18.
The young Tanagers carried a 14-0 lead into the halftime break and surviving five lost fumbles, made it stand up as they upped their record to 8-0 for the year.
Dan Tolsma scored the three touchdowns: two on two-yard runs, followed by successful extra point kicks by Adam Brooks, and one on a 67-yard run, after which the kick failed.
Vermillion had 242 yards total offense (215 yards rushing and 27 yards passing). Yankton had 111 yards in total offense (77 yards rushing and 34 yards passing).
Dan Tolsma rushed 25 times for 172 yards. Eric Rickord rushed 13 times for 35 yards. Dustin Larson rushed seven times for 26 yards. Kris Hoffman completed four of six passes for 27 yards.
Tacklers included: Ray O'Connor, six; Don O'Connor and Oliver Hope, five each; Eric Rickord, Ryan Pickett, Chris Lynch and Kristian Reynolds, four each (Lynch also had a QB sack); Clint Christensen and Dustin Larson, three each;
Adam Brooks, two; John Holoch, Andrew Knutson and Pat Brooks, one each.
"Our defensive unit really came through numerous times after we gave up the ball on a turnover," said Coach Jim McGuire. "Usually, you can't survive five turnovers like we had and expect to win. The kids were able to rise to the challenge and came through with a hard-fought win. They had a great season."
"We were able to control the football and keep the chains moving in the late stages of the game," added Roger Heirigs. "As Coach McGuire stated, five turnovers will usually spell defeat for a team. But we held them when it counted and came out with a tough, hard-earned win. It was a fun year and these guys will form the foundation for future VHS varsity football teams."
