Lady Tanagers lose in tough play with top-ranked Tri-Valley The Vermillion High varsity Lady Tanagers watched a second-half lead evaporate and were downed by the Tri-Valley Mustangs 59-42 in girls basketball Oct. 16 at Colton in the final game of the Tri-Valley Classic.

VHS had led by three at halftime.

The Tri-Valley varsity remains unbeaten at 15-0. The VHS season mark fell to 7-6.

Jaclyn Powell scored 12 points, made 3 assists and had 1 steal.

�Jaclyn Powell stepped it up offensively again, scoring 12 points,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens. �Meggie Donnelly also gave us some scoring punch off the bench with 7. Leslie Larson did a great job defensively in the first half holding one one of the best players in the state to 1 field goal.�

The Lady Tanagers jumped in front 16-11 after the opening period, led 24-21 at halftime, and then trailed 42-31 after the third period.

The loss was aided by the Lady Tanagers committing 20 turnovers.

�I was proud of how we came out ready to play in the first half,� said Coach Luitjens. �We outplayed the state�s #1 A team for the first half on both ends of the floor. Unfortunately, we couldn�t put the two halves together. Their pressure got to us a little and we gave them too many second shots in the second half. They have a great basketball team.�

VHS hit 2 of 5 three-point attempts and connected on 6 of 8 free throw attempts. The Lady Tanagers sank 15 of 31 from the field, while Tri-Valley varsity was 20 of 42 from the field. Tri-Valley varsity hit 2 of 5 three-pointers and hit 13 of 20 free throw attempts.

Despite the score, the Lady Tanagers had some good individual performances.

�Meggie Donnelly scored 7 points, and made 4 assists and 3 steals,� Coach Luitjens said.
