Plentiful harvest As harvest continues around the region, piles of corn and soybeans mount at Cargill Ag Horizons west of Vermillion. As harvest continues around the region, piles of corn and soybeans mount at Cargill Ag Horizons west of Vermillion. Manager Paul Geraets estimates that about one-half million bushels of corn are on the ground, along-side 200,000 bushels of soybeans. The piles, he added, are nothing out of the ordinary. "We've always done it," he said, after bins are filled to capacity. Geraets said yields are average for corn, but soybeans are below average, due to the lack of rain during the growing season. "We drowned out, then we dried out," he said. "The corn handled it pretty well, but the beans suffered." Dry weather, however, has helped farmers continue harvest at a steady pace.
