Redbird football team dominates BVMS Lynx After a second quarter blitz there could be no doubt of the final outcome of a 30-8 Redbird victory over a Brandon Valley Middle School's eighth-grade overmatched football team.
Scoring three touchdowns in the space of five minutes, Vermillion's defense had dominated the period and the offense took advantage of the situation.
Halfbacks Jared Burcham and B.J. Campbell scored on runs of 10 yards and 15 yards in that order, and fullback MaxMayer plunged three yards for his second TD. He had scored on a 22-yard run in the first quarter.
Two point conversions were run by Campbell, Burcham, and Brian Varns.
Total yards rushing by the Redbirds added up to 221 while the Lynx were held to less than 100. Their score came on a busted play which ended with a 54-yard gain.
Campbell rushed eight times for 76 yards; Burcham ran seven times for 52 yards; Mayer gained 30 yards on three carries; and Varns covered 24 yards in four carries.
Bryan Thomas handled the quarterbacking role in a smooth "running" offense which would have made VHS Coach Gary Culver proud.
Defensive standouts were: Kellen Cusick (10 tackles and blocked punt); Campbell (seven tackles and blocked punt); Paul Hugo (six stops); Sam Necklace (intercepted a pass); and Collin Prosser had an eight-yard sack of the quarterback and recovered a fumble; Mayer also blocked a punt.
With the victory, the eighth-grade Redbirds upped their record to 3-0 and will next be in action at the VHS field on Thursday, Oct. 7 against Bon Homme with a kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
