Redbirds play in Bon Homme tourney The Vermillion eighth grade girls' basketball team participated in the Bon Homme Tournament on Oct. 23. In first round action, Vermillion was matched up against Platte. Turnovers plagued the Redbirds as they saw their chances of advancing come to an end. Platte defeated the Redbirds 30-25.
Kayla Mollet led Vermillion with six points followed by Brittney Gilkyson, who had five. Kristen Kitto and Colette Joy each added four points, while Sarah Merrigan, Kathleen Redlin and Nicki Nelson chipped in two points a piece. Mollet led on the boards grabbing six rebounds, followed by Joy who had five. Gilkyson managed to dish out five assists and Joy had three steals.
Moving on to the losers bracket, Vermillion faced long-time rival Lennox. Vermillion bounced back from their first game and was ready to play right from the start. The Redbirds had a seven-point lead to start the second half but saw that quickly diminish as Lennox scored eight unanswered points. From that point on, the teams played equal with one another.
With eight seconds left in the game, Lennox's Lindsay Buthe stepped up to the free throw line and hit one of two free throws to put Lennox up by one. Vermillion got the ball in, but committed a turnover during the final seconds as time ran out. The Redbirds lost a tough battle, 24-25.
Mollet led the Redbirds once again in scoring with seven points. She was followed by Merrigan who scored six. Gilkyson and Kitto each had four points, while Joy rounded out the scoring column with a free throw. Mollet hit the boards hard leading the team with 10 rebounds, followed by Merrigan who ripped down five.
"The girls didn't play up to their capability in the first game against Platte, but they came back and played a good game against Lennox. It was too bad that we were unable to pull out a victory," said Coach Iverson.
The Redbirds dropped their record to 4-6 on the season.
