Ring, Basom receive initial SOM Awards John Ring and Mary Basom were recognized as the first Vermillion High School Student of the Month Award winners for 1999-2000. VHS seniors, who are endorsed by a faculty member, receive a $100 scholarship from First National Bank in Vermillion for their academic and extra-curricular efforts.
Ring has a "high percentage of mastery" as well as "motivation" in his class efforts according to faculty endorsement. He is active in cross country, Science Club, Jazz Band, track and band. This past summer, Ring taught children to program and web design at the ACE computer camps.
Basom spent part of her summer in Ecuador, South America improving her Spanish and learning "an overwhelming amount about medicine in a third world country." She is a varsity cheerleader and captain of the Dance Team. Other activities include the Honors Program, the Renaissance Board, and the National Honor Society.
Ring's parents are Ray and Mary Ring. He is undecided as to his college choice, but plans to major in one of the sciences. Basom's college plans include Creighton University in Omaha, NE with the eventual intentions of attending medical school. Her parents are Theresa and Pat Wingen.
