Seventh-graders win in close game vs. Bucks The seventh grade Redbirds football team rallied from a 6-0 halftime deficit as they defeated the Yankton Bucks 12-6 in a close defensive battle at the Yankton Middle School field last Tuesday, Oct. 19.
Kyle Mollet scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 2:06 to go, in the game, to lead the Redbirds to their second straight win. Mollet's winning touchdown capped off a 16-play, 92-yard sequence and consumed over seven minutes off the clock on the final drive. Kris Leroy led the defense with 12 tackles, including four QB sacks. Mollet rushed for 121 yards (his second straight game gaining over 100 yards rushing).
With the win, the seventh grade team closed out their season with a 2-3 record.
"We undoubtedly played our best overall game this season," said Coach Bret Jones. "It was a great team effort and we played well both offensively and defensively. I thought we executed vey well and played with great enthusiasm. I saw great improvement in this bunch of kids this year."
"I was really proud of the way our kids played in this game," added Rich Kotrba. "We battled back, after Yankton had taken the halftime lead. The team showed real character in the fourth quarter. It was a great way to finish out the season. I really enjoyed working with these players and I believe they will help form a good nucleus for future Tanager football teams."
