Tanager JV football team improves record The Vermillion High School junior varsity football team recorded a 17-13 victory over Sioux Falls Roosevelt to keep their undefeated season unblemished.

The Roughrider JV scored first on a 10-yard pass play, with less than a minute left in the first quarter to take a seven-point lead. It only took three minutes for the Tanagers to respond with a 15-yard pass to Clint Christensen from Brandon Benzel (Adam Brooks kicked the extra point) to tie the score which was maintained until Brooks kicked a 17-yard field goal with three seconds on the first half clock, to make the score 10-7.

VHS extended the lead to 17-7 midway through the third quarter when Dan Tolsma scored on a five-yard run. Brooks kicked the extra point. The defense kept RHS out of the end zone except for a 65-yard pass play with 29 seconds left in the game to complete the final scoring.

The game was dominated by the Tanagers with a first down advantage 19-4, and total yardage 339-170.

Individual Statistics:

Tolsma � 181 yards/24 carries; Brooks � 64 yards/three carries; Eric Rickord � 32 yards/15 carries; Benzel completed four of nine passes for 45 yards.

Tackles: Ryan Pickett and Tyler Vacek � five each; Ray O'Connor and Thad Roche � four each; Dan O'Connor, Brooks and Christesen � two each. Seven other defenders had tackles.

"We played very well on both sides of the football," said Coach Jim McGuire. "We really established our rushing attack and were able to control the ball for most of the game. The offensive line came off the ball really well throughout the game. Individually, Thad Roche had a great game on defense."

"Our offensive line did a great job throughout the game," added Roger Heirigs. "We controlled the football for most of the game, as the statistics indicate. Dan Tolsma had an excellent game rushing the football. It's always nice to beat a class 11AA opponent, especially on the road."

The JV team played Monday, Sept. 27 against the Canton C-Hawks at Coplan Field.
