Tanager soccer team beats Spearfish The Tanagers Girl Soccer team improved its record to 8-7 with a 2-1 victory over the Spearfish Spartans last Saturday at Cotton Park. Spearfish was rated #5 in the state in the Oct. 5 Power Point Rankings.
The Tanagers opened the match with a ferocious attack that created several scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. Katie Carlson scored the first goal of the game on a short from a free kick by Hilary Pederson. After missing a penalty kick, the Tanagers took a 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Lana Johnson.
In an effort to preserve the lead, the Tanagers bunkered down into a defensive posture for the remainder of the game. Spearfish managed to score in the eighth minute of the second half, however the Tanagers shut down the attack from that point. Elly Kjose, Tara Job, and Amy Petekavich led the defensive backline for the Tanagers. Natasha Peton and Pederson shared goalkeeping duties for the Tanagers in the game.
The Tanagers are in action this Friday in the State High School Soccer Tournament in Pierre. The opening match for Vermillion is 11 a.m. against Pierre.
