Tanagers survive conference foe Lennox; win 21-6

Tanagers survive conference foe Lennox; win 21-6 The Tanagers survived another Big Eight Conference football game between a much-improved Lennox Oriole team last Friday.

With a passing attack that netted 119 yards to complement their rushing game, Lennox was able to keep themselves "in the game" right up to the last score by Vermillion's Thad Roche with 3:26 minutes left in the fourth quarter, making the final (21-6) difference seem more comfortable than it was.

Scoring summary:

VHS Thad Roche, four-yard run (Adam Brooks kicked the extra point); Cullen Iverson, 34-yard run (Brooks kicked the extra point); Roche, seven-yard run (Brooks kicked the extra point).

LHS Nick Poppe, 17-yard pass from Ryan Kruse (kick failed).

Individual stats for VHS:

Roche, 77 yards/17 carries; Jared Thedorff, 68 yards/16 carries; Jason Madsen 29 yards/five carries; Iverson 61 yards/six carries, also 4-9 passing for 39 yards; Cory Novak caught two passes for 23 yards.

Defense stats:

Tackles three players had 11 each Brandon Benzel, Travis Vacek and Chris Sinkie; Dave Hanson had eight and Jason Madson had four plus two interceptions. Pass break-ups were credited to Vacek, Novak, Chris Nelson and Landon Morse (two), and Iverson recovered a fumble. Mike Vietz also had a pass interception.

"We continue to plague ourselves with turnovers," said Coach Gary Culver. "We had a great opportunity to go up 21-0 with a first and goal on the Lennox four-yard line and came away with nothing. We can ill afford to miss 'cashing in' on such opportunities. Then we let them back in the ball game by fumbling on our next possession and they ultimately scored.

"I was happy with the way our team responded with a great 70-yard drive and a score that probably put the game out of reach," he added.

With the win, the varsity upped their record to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The Tanagers will next be in action as they host the South Sioux City Cardinals for homecoming Friday, Oct. 1 in a 7 p.m. kickoff at the DakotaDome. Fans are reminded that

the Tanager Day game kickoff is 1/2 hour earlier than usual.
