Turnovers contribute to Lady Tanagers' loss The Vermillion High varsity Lady Tanagers were topped by the Sioux Falls Washington Warriors 54-49 in girls basketball Sept. 25 at Vermillion.
Sioux Falls Washington is an AA opponent. The VHS season mark fell to 5-4.
Leslie Larson had 10 rebounds and four assists to complement her seven points.
The Lady Tanagers trailed 20-11 after the opening period, trailed 29-20 after the second quarter, and then trailed 44-35 going into the final period.
The loss was aided by the Lady Tanagers committing 22 turnovers.
�We fell behind early but played a good ?catch-up� game and, except for a couple late turnovers and our failure to generate our usual heroics from the charity stripe, we had a chance to win at the end,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens. �Thirty-three percent from the free throw line won�t win many games.�
VHS hit 4 of 10 three-point tries and connected on 7 of 21 free throw tries. The Lady Tanagers made 15 of 41 from the field, while WHS was 17 of 33 from the field. WHS hit 2 of 9 three-point attempts and made 14 of 21 free throw attempts.
The Lady Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
�Alison Obr was 4 for 9 from 3 point range,� Coach Luitjens said.
