VHS falls to West Central Vermillion came close in two opportunities to entering into a tie score with West Central with less than a minute to play in the game as the Vermillion High varsity Lady Tanagers were defeated by the West Central Trojans 62-55 in girls basketball Oct. 12 at Vermillion.
We had 2 shots at the basket with less than 1 minute while we were down by 2 points, but we missed, said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens.
Jaclyn Powell was a shining star, both offensively and defensively, for the Lady Tanagers.
Jaclyn Powell played an outstanding game, said Coach Luitjens. She led us in scoring with 14 points and added 5 assists. But more impressive was her defense. She held Katie Krauth of West Central to 0 field goals. Krauth is averaging over 20 points per game.
The Lady Tanagers trailed 14-12 at the end of the first period, trailed 29-24 after the second period, and then trailed 47-41 after the third quarter.
Defensively, we did what we had to do against Krauth, but Nelson and Christianson hurt us, said Coach Luitjens. We werent very productive on offense, converting only 4-12 free throws in the fourth quarter.
