VHS freshman/sophomore team downed by Warriors The VHS freshman/sophomore Lady Tanagers were downed by the Sioux Falls Washington sophomore Warriors 35-19 in girls basketball Sept. 25 at Vermillion after falling prey to a first-quarter blitz.
The season-opening loss gave VHS a record of 0-1 while WHS moved to 6-2.
The Sioux Falls Washington defense really gave us problems in the first quarter and we were held to 0 points, said VHS Coach Marilyn Martyn. You cant win many ball games with that kind of offensive output. Our girls did come back in the second half and played much better basketball. Many of these girls participated in the games during the day and may have been a little tired at the end.
The contest was well-played, with the Lady Tanagers committing only 5 turnovers and the Warriors committing only 8.
The Lady Tanagers fell behind 14-0 after the opening period, trailed 18-8 at halftime, and then trailed 29-12 after the third period.
VHS sank 6 of 9 from the line while the Warriors sank 4 of 8 free throw tries.
VHS was out-rebounded 25-13.
