VHS JV team wins against SC Heelan The Vermillion High School junior varsity football team continued its winning ways as the Tanagers beat the Sioux City Heelan Crusaders 19-6 at Memorial Field in Sioux City.
With the win, the junior varsity upped its record to 6-0 and will next be in action at Lennox on Oct. 11 for a 5 p.m.kickoff against the Orioles at the Lennox High School Sports Complex.
Scores for VHS against Heelan included: Dan Tolsma on a 27-yard run (kicked failed); Dave Hanson on a 34-yard run (kick failed); and Hanson on a four-yard run (Adam Brooks kick).
Vermillion had 285 yards total offense (268 yards rushing and 17 yards passing). Tolsma rushed 17 times for 116 yards, while Hanson rushed 23 times for 137 yards.
Oliver Hope broke up three passes, Brooks broke up two passes and had one interception, and Ben Bazemore had one interception.
Hanson led the team in tackles with nine. Other tackles were credited to Thad Roche with six, Don O'Connor and Clint Christensen, four each, Brooks, Tyler Vacek, Hope, Eric Rickord, Ray O'Connor, Tm Russell and John Holoch with three each, Dustin Larson, Ryan Pickett and Chris Lynch with two apiece, and Tolsma, Pat Brooks and Kris Hoffman at one each.
"We played very well on both sides of the football," said Coach Jim McGuire. "We really established our rushing attack in the fourth quarter and were able to control and football in the late stages. It's always a nice win when you can beat a tradition-rich football power like Sioux City Heelan."
"Our offensive line did a great job throughout the game," added Roger Heirigs. "We controlled the football for much of the game, as the statistics indicate. Individually, Dan Tolsma and Dave Hanson had an excellent game rushing the football. The real credit for their success belongs to the 'O' line and the great job they did in the game. Our defense came up with some big plays, especially after the turnovers."
