Yankton's rally defeats Vermillion The Vermillion High varsity Lady Tanagers ended up on the wrong side of a fourth-quarter rally and were defeated by the Yankton Gazelles 33-26 in girls basketball Oct. 19 at Yankton.
VHS had led by one after the third quarter.
I felt good about our defense but we couldnt get any offensive production, said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens. Yanktons defense took our guards out of the game. We simply could not put the ball in the hole that night. You wont win many games only scoring 7 points in a half.
The Lady Tanagers led 11-6 after the first quarter, went into the locker room up 19-14 at halftime, and then led 23-22 going into the final period.
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 8-6, while Yankton varsity improved to 7-8.
VHS sank 5 of 8 free throw tries while the Gazelles sank 5 of 10 free throw tries.
The Lady Tanagers had several noteworthy individual efforts in defeat.
Defensively, we played well, Coach Luitjens said. Its not often you hold a team to 33 points and still lose the game.
