Around the town by Emma Drissen The Vermillion Area Chamber of Commerce is planning the holiday shopping season kick-off on Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999. Vermillion merchants participating in the Holiday Open House will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Santa will be arriving at noon officially starting the holiday season. Children can visit Santa in the lobby of Community First State Bank, Vermillion's holiday headquarters! One of Santa's helpers will also have Vermillion Bucks for sale in $5, $10, $20, and $50. There will also be sleigh ides from 1 to 4:30 p.m. starting in front of the bank.
The Austin-Whittemore House will be open for tours. The Washington St. Art Center will have its "Glad Tidings Art Sale" featuring local and regional artists. Tigert Art Gallery will feature James Meger, nationally known and award winning artist from Minnesota. Show highlights will include his new print "Holy Night" fourth in his holiday series.
A free movie All I Want for Christmas will be shown at Vermillion Theater at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. For parents who need a babysitter while you shop, the Vermillion Public Library will have daycare from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
This year we have invited 40 people from Newcastle, NE to be our guests for the day. A bus sponsored by Hy-Vee and Community First State Bank will provide transportation. The Chamber will be filling shopping bags for each of our guests. If you would like to participate, please call the Chamber at 624-5571. We would like the bags filled by Nov. 18.
Many of our merchants will have extended hours after our open house which include Sundays from noon 5 to 4 p.m. from Nov. 28 through Dec. 19.
Don't forget to mark your calendar for the "Christmas Scandia" Candlelight Tour of Homes, Friday, Dec. 3. Tickets are on sale at Ashmore's, Nook 'n Cranny, Deb's Hallmark and Vermillion Beauty Shop. Proceeds will benefit the Clay County Historical Society.
