City council hears request for enhanced downtown parking

City council hears request for enhanced downtown parking by David Lias The Vermillion City Council heard a plea Monday to take action preferably the tearing down of the old police building in downtown Vermillion to create additional parking for the citys Main Street retailers and their customers.

Young Moore III noted in a letter written to Mayor William Radigan and members of the council that Vermillion could attract a new business to the citys Main Street if parking problems could be resolved.

Moore is a trustee of the Incense Lodge #2 A.F.&A.M. that owns the building at 5 West Main where Stage, a clothing store, once operated. It closed recently.

We believe that a lack of adequate parking was a contributing factor in Stage closing their business before the expiration of their lease, Moores letter stated.

Moore informed the council that there is a potential lessee for this property who has stated to me that he will not lease the building until there is some resolution to the downtown parking problem.

Moore gave additional verbal input to the council during its meeting Monday.

There has been continuous debate brought to this council over an extended period of time that cites inadequate parking as a paramount concern by owners of property and businesses that function in the downtown area, Moore said, reading a prepared statement. We have inherited a business district that today is only marginally viable and will in time disappear as the focal point of our community.

Moore said downtown business and property owners are ready and willing to enter into a consortium with the city council to develop a long term plan to strengthen the downtown district. Parking will be a major part of such a plan but certainly not the only consideration.

The council took no action following Moores input. It later agreed, however, to a two-month trial of limiting parking on six spaces downtown to no longer than one hour.
