Freshman Tanagers end season with loss Closing out their season, the Vermillion freshman Lady Tanagers were defeated by the Yankton Gazelles 34-23 in girls basketball Nov. 1 at Yankton.
Jenna Gilkyson stepped up with 8 points and 6 rebounds. Allison Stewart, Brooke Nelson and Whitney Tolsma each had 4 points.
�We came up short by 11 points but not until after a valiant effort defensively,� said VHS Coach Marilyn Martyn. �Our teamwork was great but we just came up short with the buckets.�
The Lady Tanagers trailed 10-5 at the end of the first period, trailed 16-7 at halftime, and then trailed 30-15 after the third quarter.
�The freshman girls have been playing with 6 players most of the season,� said Coach Martyn. �In the games they�ve played together, they�ve won 9 and lost only 4.�
VHS saw its record fall to 7-8, while Yankton freshmen upped its mark to 10-3.
VHS hit 5 of 8 from the line while the Gazelles hit 4 of 4 from the line.
Even with the loss, the Lady Tanagers had several good individual efforts.
�These girls have unity, spirit and good teamwork values and should be a great asset to the team in future seasons ahead,� Coach Martyn said.
