Freshman Tanagers win in overtime play The Vermillion freshman Lady Tanagers defeated the Parker Pheasants 29-27 in a tight overtime battle in girls basketball Oct. 25 at Parker.
The score was tied 27-27 after regulation.
Brooke Nelson scored two free throws in the extra period to deliver the win.
Jenna Gilkyson scored 8 points, pulled down 4 rebounds and made 1 steal.
The Lady Tanagers fell behind 11-2 at the end of the first period, trailed 17-8 at halftime, and then trailed 22-16 after the third period.
The Lady Tanagers committed only 7 turnovers in the victory.
�It was a very exciting game and we�re certainly happy to get this win on the road,� said VHS Coach Marilyn Martyn. �We played very well defensively again in this game.�
VHS improved its record to 7-4, while the Parker freshman team dropped to 6-4.
VHS sank 15 of 18 free throw attempts while the Pheasants hit 4 of 4 free throw tries.
Several individual efforts helped in the win.
�Whitney Tolsma scored 4 points, pulled down 2 rebounds, made 1 assist and 4 steals,� Coach Martyn said.
