Janklow awards $25,000 to W.H. Over Museum Bill Janklow is awarding $25,000 to the W.H. Over Museum in Vermillion to help establish a Lewis & Clark Learning and Information Center at the museum.
Janklow says he made the grant award after receiving a letter from Rep. Judy Clark. "Judy wrote a very powerful letter about the significance of Spirit Mound and the Vermillion area in the expedition. She convinced me this is a very worthwhile educational opportunity."
The center will focus on the significance of Spirit Mound to the Native American peoples of the area, and the events surrounding the visit of Lewis and Clark to Spirit Mound. The center will also provide South Dakotans and visitors to the state with information about the expedition and the natural history of the area at that time.
The grant will fund an interactive touch screen computer exhibit, informational materials, display cases for artifacts, a large mural depicting highlights of the expedition in the region, and a part-time graduate student fellowship to help develop the center.
