Lady Tanager freshmen drop two in tournament The Vermillion freshman Lady Tanagers lost to the Dakota Valley Panthers 43-32 in girls basketball Oct. 30 at Elk Point in the first round of the District 8A Junior Varsity Tournament.

Nikki Mollet led the team with 13 points and 13 rebounds but the team couldn�t overcome the even scoring of Dakota Valley.

The Lady Tanagers fell behind 11-7 after the opening period, trailed 23-14 after the second quarter, and then trailed 33-23 going into the final period.

VHS connected on 9 of 20 free throw attempts while the Panthers connected on 5 of 8 from the line.

Dakota Valley used a tough �jump and run� defense which kept the Tanager group off balance throughout the game.

The Lady Tanagers ended up on the wrong side of a second-half rally and were defeated by the Alcester Cubs 30-26 in girls basketball Oct. 30 at Elk Point in the consolation game of the District 8A Junior Varsity Tournament.

The second game was played just 10 minutes after the completion of the first, not giving the girls time to review the play in the previous game and to get better organized.

Since this was the only time this season that all the freshmen girls basketball players were able to play together in a game, it could be expected that facing sophomore and junior participants on junior varsity teams, the results might be predicted.

VHS had led by two at halftime.

Tessa Tuetken scored 9 and Nikki Mollet scored 6 to lead the Lady Tanagers JV.

�Our team lacked the unity and teamwork necessary to pull out a victory,� said VHS Coach Marilyn Martyn.

The teams were deadlocked 6-6 after the first quarter, the Lady Tanagers led 14-12 after the second period, and then trailed 22-20 going into the final period.

The contest was well-played, with the Lady Tanagers committing only 7 turnovers and the Cubs committing only 8.

VHS sank 3 of 4 free throw attempts while the Cubs hit 6 of 11 free throw attempts.
