Loss to Huskies ends Lady Tanagers’ season

Loss to Huskies ends Lady Tanagers' season Closing out their season, the Vermillion High varsity Lady Tanagers were defeated by the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 53-43 in girls basketball Nov. 4 at North Sioux City in the second round of the District 8A Tournament.

The Lady Tanagers fell behind 14-3 after the opening period, trailed 28-17 after the second period, and then trailed 36-26 after the third quarter.

We really needed someone to step up offensively to give an answer for Elk Points Emily Kyte, but it just didnt happen! said Coach Lance Luitjens. Kyte had all but four baskets for EP-J.

The key for the EP-J game was them getting off to a 12-1 start. After we ?spotted them 11 points, we played even with them for the rest of the game. I think we were just a little nervous at first, and couldnt convert at the offensive end, which EP-J took advantage of, Coach Luitjens said.

VHS saw its record fall to 12-7, while Elk Point-Jefferson varsity upped its mark to 19-1.

We cut the lead to 3 in the fourth quarter but couldnt get over the hump and free throws kept them in the lead at the final horn. I truly expect EP-J to do well in the rest of the region/state tourneys, Coach Luitjens said.

VHS hit 0 of 7 three-point attempts and made 21 of 33 from the line. The Lady Tanagers hit 11 of 44 field goals, while the Elk Point-Jefferson varsity was 15 of 39 from the field. The Elk Point-Jefferson varsity hit 3 of 7 three-point tries and hit 19 of 29 from the line.

Im proud of how the girls stuck together and battled this season. A 12-8 record (with our schedule) is nothing to hang your head about, Coach Luitjens said. We are losing two super leaders in Melissa Rydell and Nancy Heine, but we also have nine other letter winners returning for next year.
