Pheasants shot down by Vermillion varsity The Vermillion High varsity Lady Tanagers shot down the Parker Pheasants 60-39 in girls basketball Oct. 25 at Parker in a win ignited by a first-quarter blitz.

Ashley Bjorkman scored 14 points, pulled down 5 rebounds, and made 1 assist and 1 steal.

The Lady Tanagers led 23-9 after the opening period, led 36-17 at halftime, and then led 47-25 going into the final period.

�Our defense and three-point scoring enabled us to build a big first quarter lead and our free throws improvement (25 of 31) helped us to maintain it,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens. �We finally were able to put the ball in the hoop.�

VHS improved its record to 10-7, while Parker varsity dropped to 3-11.

VHS made 3 of 10 three-pointers and sank 25 of 31 free throw tries. The Lady Tanagers hit 13 of 50 field goal attempts, while Parker varsity was 15 of 39 from the field. Parker varsity connected on 0 of 1 three-point attempts and connected on 9 of 27 free throw tries.

VHS held a 47-30 edge on the boards.

The Lady Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.

�Meggie Donnelly contributed 13 points, 5 assists and made 2 steals,� Coach Luitjens said. �She did a good job setting up the offense and distributing the ball.�
