Rummage sale to benefit orphanage Casa Guatemala Orphanage on the Rio Dulce in the eastern jungles of Guatemala was nearly destroyed by an earthquake on July 11, 1999. Rebuilding the orphanage will cost an estimated $500,000. In a country as poor as Guatemala this is a staggering amount of money. In addition, the orphanage has received no aid from international relief agencies and little help from the Guatemalan government. However, since July, friends of Casa Guatemala around the world have been working to raise funds to rebuild the orphanage.
On Nov. 13, friends of Casa Guatemala Orphanage in Vermillion will be sponsoring a community rummage sale to benefit the orphanage and help with the rebuilding efforts. The rummage sale will be held in the Fellowship Hall of Trinity Lutheran Church, 816 E. Clark Street, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Donations of quality used items for the sale can be dropped off at the Luther Center, 723 E. Cherry Street through Thursday, Nov. 11.
The Luther Center is open from 9 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. For more information call (605) 624-2834.
