Wallers honored by SD Library Association Steve and Mary Waller received the "Friend of the Library Award" from the South Dakota Library Association at the association's award banquet at the Ramkota Inn, Watertown, on Oct. 7.
Steve Waller, a professor in the USD School of Medicine, and Mary Waller, a quilter and designer, are the first husband and wife team to receive the award since it was initiated in 1977.
Created to recognize non-librarians who have made significant contributions to library development in South Dakota communities, the award is given annually to people who have shown initiative, creativity and support toward the betterment of a South Dakota library and its services. The Wallers have both held offices in the Friends of Vermillion Public Library in addition to planning and participating in many library events during the past seven years, according to Jane Larson, public librarian.
Their "unflagging support" has included serving as chairpersons on committees; sitting up tables; carrying boxes of books to and from the library for sales; clerking at sales; designing and creating flyers, bookmarks, postcards, brochures and mailing lists; contacting volunteers; preparing advertising for various media; and bringing "treats" for both staff and public events.
"Steve has acted as a voice of support for the library during budget sessions, renovation and celebration," said Larson. In addition, she identified him as "a moving force" in the development and continuation of the Vermillion Public Library Foundation.
